Hey folks!
So far, we’ve covered what naturalization is and how to apply for it. Now, let’s dig into the specific steps of the naturalization process. Buckle up, as we journey through each milestone on your path to U.S. citizenship!
Step 1: Ensure You’re Eligible
First things first, check if you’re eligible. This means meeting requirements like having a green card for at least 5 years, being 18 or older, and having a basic knowledge of English and U.S. civics.
Becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization involves meeting specific eligibility criteria set by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). At its core, the process requires applicants to have held permanent resident status (a Green Card) for at least five years or three years if married to a U.S. citizen. During this period, continuous residence and physical presence in the U.S. are essential. Applicants must also demonstrate good moral character, an understanding of the English language, and a basic knowledge of U.S. history and government. Additionally, they should show an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution. Eligibility extends to individuals who meet these criteria and are 18 years or older, making the journey to citizenship a blend of legal requirements and personal commitment to the U.S. as a new homeland.

Step 2: Get Your Application Ready (Form N-400)
The N-400 form is your ticket to the naturalization process. Fill out details about yourself, your background, and your time in the U.S. Be thorough and truthful – this form is the foundation of your application. The application has 18 parts and 20 pages of questions; you need to complete the first 12 parts and sign on part 13. You can access a copy of Form N-400 here.
Step 3: Gather Necessary Documents
You’ll need documents proving your eligibility – like a copy of your green card, travel documents, and potentially others, depending on your situation. Think of these as the puzzle pieces that complete your application picture.
Step 4: Submit Application and Pay the Fee
Once everything is in order, submit your form along with the required fee. You can do this online or via mail. This fee covers processing costs and is a standard part of the application. As of 12/22/23, the application fee is $640, and the biometric fee is $85; the total application fee is $725. Note that if you’re over 75 years or older, you don’t need to pay the biometric fee.
Step 5: Attend Your Biometrics Appointment
After submitting your application, you’ll receive two letters in the mail. One is a receipt from USCIS that they received your application, and the other is your biometric appointment notice. Here, they’ll take your fingerprints, photo, and a signature. It’s quick and straightforward but crucial for your background check. You will need your ID and your biometric appointment letter.
Step 6: The Interview and Citizenship Test
Next up is the interview. A USCIS officer will ask questions about your application and background. You’ll also take an English and civics test. To pass your civics test, you must answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly. These questions are selected from a pool of 100 possible questions. The questions cover various topics related to U.S. history, government, and civic principles. It sounds daunting, but with a little preparation, you can ace it.
Step 7: Receive Your Decision
After your interview, USCIS will make a decision on your application. If it’s positive, you’re almost at the finish line!
Step 8: The Oath of Allegiance
The final step is the Oath of Allegiance. This is where you officially become a U.S. citizen. It’s a special moment, often at a formal ceremony, where you pledge allegiance to the United States and its Constitution.
Congratulations!
You’ve reached the end of the naturalization process and are now a U.S. citizen. It’s a journey of commitment and persistence, but the reward – being part of the American story – is incomparable.
